Mirfield Agricultural Show is excited to reveal this year’s show will be opened by Dewsbury-born and former rugby league star Danny Maun.
Danny Maun who is an ambassador for Timestep Community Dance will be joined by inspirational six year-old Leila Higgins from the dance group. Timestep Community Dance, based in Heckmondwike, provide free and subsidised dance and movement classes for young people and adults with a disability or learning difficulties.
Six-year-old Leila was diagnosed with Cerebral Palsy following a stroke when she was just a few weeks old and her mum was advised by doctors she would never be able to walk. Leila who loves dancing was not going to let that stop her. Through one-to-one movement and dance sessions at Timestep Dance Studio, based at Ponderosa Business Park in Heckmondwike, she no longer uses her wheelchair in classes. She takes part in weekly group’s cheer sessions and private pilate classes and she hopes to do group ballet in the future.
Dewsbury lad Danny became an ambassador for the community dance group following a successful rugby career having played 370 games for Batley, Dewsbury, Featherstone and Hunslet. It was at Batley where Danny had the most success, winning a major final. Danny is now the assistant coach for Batley Bulldogs.
Jonathan Evans, Mirfield Show Chairperson comments; “We are delighted local lad Danny Maun will be opening this year’s show where we are celebrating our heavy woolen heritage. We are also pleased to support Danny’s work with Timestep Community Dance Group and were inspired by Leila’s determination and spirit to dance! Danny and Leila will be opening the Mirfield Show at midday on Sunday 19th August in the main ring.”
Timestep Community Dance was set up as a charity in January 2018 to raise funds so local youngsters and adults with a disability or learning difficulties can receive free and subsidised one-to-one movement, Pilates and dance sessions. You can find out more about their work and how you can support them on their Facebook page.
Join Danny and Leila as they open the Mirfield Show at midday in the main ring on the Huddersfield Show Ground on Sunday 19th August. Tickets will be priced at just £6 for adults and under 16s are free. Tickets will be on sale later in the year.
