Creative Writing 2026

Theme: This year’s show theme is living in medieval times – any aspect. Stories can also be about anything connected with spring or summer – such as food from the countryside.

Use your creative flair to create a story for the Mirfield Show! This year’s Spring and Summer Story Writing Competition has a category for everyone in the family, free competition entry and creative prizes, it will be fun to enter.

Open to all – individuals, schools, and other groups. Entry is free and winners will be announced from
10th July – with entries displayed in the competitions’ marquee on show day in August.

Prizes

  • Mirfield Show Writer’s Kits, with all sorts of useful things, for winners in each class.
  • Gift prizes will be given for other intriguing, amusing, atmospheric, community-related
    and effective writing (age taken into account), or pictures from classes 5 and 6

Competition rules:

The competition terms and conditions are simple:

1. Legibly write or type on one side of as many sheets of paper you need. Securely attach your contact details on a separate piece of paper – your name and telephone/mobile number (an address is helpful (your school is OK) and – if you are under 18 – your age category.

2. If you are under 18, please also provide a responsible adult’s confirmation that they agree the competition terms.

3. All stories must be submitted for judging by 30 June 2026 (Acknowledgement of receipt on request).

4. Pictures for classes 7 and 8 can be any size up to A3 (30 cm x 42cm).

5. If there are fewer than five entries in a class, we reserve the right to amalgamate classes, and re-award the prizes.

6. Entries should be e-mailed to [email protected] or posted to:

Look out for details of how to enter online on our Facebook page. Online may not be suitable for pictures, particularly for classes 7 and 8.

7. The judge’s decision will be final.

Class 1 – Adults and young adults 16+ – story up to 2000 words

Class 2 – Writers 15 – 17 years – story of up to 1500 words

Class 3 – Writers 13 to 14 years of age – story up to 1200 words

Class 4 – Writers 11 to 12 years of age – story up to 1000 words

Class 5 – Writers 9 to 10 years of age – story up to 800 words – may include a picture

Class 6 – Writers up to 8 years of age – story up to 600 words – may include a picture

Class 7 – Creatives 6 to 8 years – picture (any medium) telling a theme-related story

Class 8 – Creatives up to 5 years of age – themed picture in any medium
