Winter Poetry Competition 2025
We seek poems reflecting this chilly season – any format and as serious or amusing as you wish – simply enjoy writing them.
Entries to reflect sport, tradition, celebration, friendship, weather, the natural world, food, keeping warm – any part of these seasons and be as short as you like.
We seek atmosphere and imagination and emotion rather than correct spelling or punctuation. Writers’ kits and winner rosettes await the winners of each class and rosettes and prizes await many makers of other imaginative work.
Entries from all ages are open right up to Friday 19th December 2025.
Your poems will be displayed in the show marquee on Sunday 23rd August 2026.
Competition terms and conditions:
1. Write or type on one side of as many sheets of paper you need. Securely attach your name and telephone/mobile number (an address is helpful (your school is OK)) and – if you are under 15 – your age category.
2. If you are under 18, please also provide a responsible adult’s confirmation that they agree to you taking part.
3. All poems must be received by Friday 19th December 2025 (Ack. of receipt on request).
4. E-mail entries as an attachment to writers@mirfieldshow.com or post/deliver to Mirfield Show Winter Poems, 51 Springfield Park, Mirfield WF14 9PE, or deliver to The Emporium, 75 Huddersfield Road, Mirfield WF14 8AT (Email may not be suitable for attaching pictures, particularly for classes 7 and 8.)
5. The judge’s decision will be final. Please let us know if you do not want us to display your entry at the show on 23rd August 2026.

Class 1 – adults – poem up to 30 lines |

Class 2 –writers 15 to 17 years – poem of up to 25 lines |

Class 3 – writers 13 to 14 years of age – poem up to 20 lines |
|
Class 4 – writers 11 to 12 years of age – poem of up to 20 lines |

Class 5 – writers 9 to 10 years of age – poem up to 16 lines. May include a picture |

Class 6 – writers up to 8 years of age – poem up to 12 lines – may include a picture |

Class 7 – creatives 6 to 8 years of age – theme related picture up to A3 size (30cm x 42 cm). May include words. |
