Competitions for all the Family at the Mirfield Show

Posted by Karen Bullivant on May 6, 2017

Everyone in the family can get involved in the competitions and classes at the Mirfield Show which this year have been inspired by our theme – the 1960s.

There are lots of classes just for children including; the horse and pony show, baking, creative writing, flower and vegetable exhibits, craft, making drawing and photography classes.

On the day, children can join in with lots of different games and races throughout the day with some 1960s inspired games including hula-hooping races and welly wanging.

As always the judges will have a difficult decision to pick the winner during the children’s fancy dress competition with its 1960s theme. We can’t wait expect to see lots of flower girls, spacesuits, hippies and Austin Powers inspired costumes.

The Build-a-Scarecrow competition may see a few 60s inspired scarecrows gracing the showground in their bright wacky outfits.

Even the youngest in the family can get involved. The Bonny Baby Show will be taking place with parents able to register their children on the day to take part. There are three age categories to enter for children aged 0 to two with some great prizes offered by the competition’s sponsor.

As always there’s lots of competitions for the adults too. With classes for the best homebrew and wine. A men-only baking competition where we are looking for the best coffee and walnut cake. In the flower and vegetable competitions we are looking for a 60s themed garland as well as the tastiest vegetables in Mirfield. Even if you don’t come first you could still take home a trophy for most
show points in the domestic and handicraft sections by entering lots of different classes.

Closing the show will be the popular Tug-of-War Final. Do you have a team to pull the reigning champions out of the ring? It’s free to enter and teams can register via the Mirfield Show website.

Entries close on 15th August but we encourage early registration to avoid disappointment.

Louise Hardy, head of competitions & classes says: “We are really excited to reveal the competitions and classes for this year’s show and are looking forward to receiving and judging all the entries. Most competitions and classes are free to enter. Online registration opens in June and we encourage everyone to register their entries early to save time on show day. We are hoping for a bumper year of entries.”

The full list of competitions and classes are availableto view on the Mirfield Show website and in the free show programme which will be available in local shops on Mirfield high street very soon. Make sure you pick up a copy.
